Abstract:Driven by capital logic and digital technology, online symbolic consumerism penetrates college students' spiritual lives through symbolic value manipulation, algorithmic targeting, and emotional marketing. The core features of this phenomenon can be embodied in the following aspects. That is, symbol worship has supplanted substantive needs, the virtual identity has dissolved real-world values, traffic logic has dominated consumption choices, and signifier worship has distorted value cognition. In this vein, this trend has engendered four spiritual crises among college students, namely the illusion resulted from diluted ideals, utilitarianism derived from materialized values, secularization caused by dissolved lofty pursuits, and superficiality stemmed from weakened critical cognition. It is noteworthy that there are four reasons that can account for these crises. Firstly, college students fails to decode the capital logic and ideological nature of symbolic consumption. Secondly, the critical discourse of ideological and political education is lagged behind, thus failing to guide college students effectively. Next, educational media have weak defense mechanisms against symbolic consumption penetration and lack communication effectiveness. Lastly, the governance for the spread of symbolic consumption is missed in the educational environment, and multi-party coordination has not yet formed a joint force. To address these issues, it is necessary to build a systematic corrective framework which may encompass value guidance, channel construction, resource supply, and institutional guarantee. This can be achieved by using Marxist theory to guide the disenchantment of symbols, leveraging technological empowerment to establish precise communication and guidance channels, creating diversified carriers for spiritual nourishment, and improving a multi-party collaborative institutional guarantee system. These measures will solidify the value foundation of college students' spiritual life and contribute to the healthy and abundant development of their inner mental life.
